Was spending a long weekend in Austin, TX, and wanted to see some of the natural areas in the region. Hearing from people about the lack of open, public space in Texas, I wanted to visit the NWR, and see what it had to offer. The Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is north of Austin, and straddles Lake Travis. It is a thin strip of ridgeline with a nice tree canopy. My wife and I enjoyed an easy hike along the ridgeline with open views of the Lake Travis area.
